Where are we? Based in Lira, North Uganda
Our vision To see peace spread from here throughout Uganda, Africa and beyond by training people at all levels of society in peacemaking. To use mediation as a way to minimise the number of disputes which resort to courts of law.
Our Roots PRMA was started by Dickson Ogwang in 1996 with a background of the long running troubles caused by the rebel Lord's Resistance Army. The results of these troubles were many refugees growing up in Internally Displaced Peoples camps over a period of 25 years. This created a whole generation who did not know their real home. Land disputes were common when people returned to their prior homes and the violence of the period engendered a culture of violent response to conflict which is also common in many areas, not just northern Uganda.
Our team In addition to Dickson Ogwang who is a lawyer, Prosecutor and currently Deputy Ambassador to the US, there are a number of Ugandan members of the team with legal training, with expertise in delivering training. We have people skilled in mediation techniques who can help to solve disputes without recourse to litigation.
Training session underway
Our Progress We have trained a large number of people in the Lango region of Northern Uganda in Biblical Peacemaking, including cultural leaders from the Lango and Acholi people as well as church pastors, local councillors, military leaders, magistrates and other people of influence in local matters. We have developed links with other peacemaking projects such as CHIPS (see their website www.chipspeace.org ).
Our support We are supported by training and resources from Peacemaker Ministries, from Community Mediation Project and a number of individuals in different countries. If you would like to add your support please contact us.
